Tree lopper faces penalty

A North Sydney resident faces a maximum fine of up to $1.1 million for allegedly attempting to chop down an 80-year-old fig tree on private property without council permission.

The tree is on land recently acquired by Sydney Church of England Grammar School and backs on to several backyards.

Council documents show that the homeowner who hired the private contractor to cut the tree had found a fallen branch that looked to be pest ridden. They had inquired about lopping branches but allegedly not received any correspondence before hiring the contractor.
